This is the best hotel we have stayed in while in China. We did not use leisure or business facilities so cannot rate them. Not only did we have internet in the room- there was a computer as well! The restaurant is great- not just for the excellent buffet breakfast. There is not a lot of english speaking staff but they make up for it any way they can. |

The hotel is located in the second old town of Lijiang, called Suhe. This location is superb, since Suhe is a lovely renovated old town, much less crowded and noisy than the original part in the city center and allows easy and cheap access to the main attractions of the city. The hotel is a low compound, divided into several beautiful separated courtyards. Each courtyard is a three story building, but there is no elevator and luggage must be carried by hand. The courtyards are connected by a stunning maze of pavilions, water canals, small bridges and Chinese gardens. This scenery gives the hotel a relaxing atmosphere and a unique boutique style as opposed to the giant executive fortress' downtown. Unfortunately, the rustic-like environment of the exterior decoration stays outside since the rooms are decorated in a western chain hotel executive style. The rooms are clean, comfortable although not very spacious. A usually dead slow broadband internet line is included in the price.
The downsides: Breakfast is Chinese style (mainly: what we westerns eat for lunch, Chinese eat in the mornings.) After complaining to the management, some vegetables were added to the buffet. Expect disappointment breakfast wise.
Another downside is the lack of public transportation to the city center, although taxis are usually parked outside and a ride to town costs between 10-12 Yuan. Beware: there's a one time entrance fee of 40 Yuan to Suhe, pay up and remember to carry your hotel key in order not to pay twice. You will be requested to pay again upon entrance to the jade dragon mountain (YuLong XueShan) so carry the tickets with you since they are valid for a week and never pay twice, even raise your voice if needed, yelling works.
Overall, the hotel is lovely, quiet and highly recommended to ones who had enough of old, moldy and cramped guest house rooms. Suhe is wonderful and the atmosphere is amazing. I also recommend on an Italian restaurant in Suhe called, "Mama mia", (near "Little Paris Café"), this place is managed by an Italian guy which guarantees the food has a real Italian flare to it (I especially loved the penne in pesto sauce and the Tiramisu).
